STUDENT

Kara Hernandez ('22)

Kara Hernandez hails from Dallas, Texas, having also lived in Tennessee and Hawaii before coming to UNT. Although Hernandez originally chose to major in finance, she quickly realized that she needed greater proficiency in math to actively enjoy her studies. As she had already enjoyed several management courses offered by the G. Brint College of Business, a transition into human resources (HR) was the natural choice.

The HR program offered Hernandez insight into compensation, benefits, and workplace safety, and she found that some of the most important lessons detailed personal advocacy and leadership in the workplace. Some of Hernandez's greatest academic accomplishments showcase her dedication to the HR field, such as her selection as the director of Chapter Information Systems for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and her placement on the President's List in 2020.

In addition to these achievements, Hernandez interned at Whitley Penn, a well-established public accounting firm. During her time there, she took on a generalist role and gained crucial insight into onboarding, benefits and recruiting; the latter of which she discovered to be her career passion.

After graduation, Hernandez aspires to be a corporate recruiter and, eventually, a recruitment director.

Hernandez finds that her time in the HR community has helped to broaden her network and hone her professional skills. She urges future HR students to stay connected with internships and clubs like SHRM, which are invaluable experiences, and help students to discover, cultivate, and advance their career paths.

Master's Degree in Taxation earns national recognition

University of North Texas has been ranked as one of the year’s best schools for earning a master’s degree in taxation online by website OnlineMastersDegrees.org.

UNT’s recognition comes at a time when enrollment in master’s degree programs is on the rise. In October of 2021, the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) reported a 7.3 percent increase in first-time graduate student enrollment in Fall 2020. First-time, part-time student enrollment rose by 13.5 percent. The CGS report cites the growth of online and hybrid learning options as a primary driver of these trends.

“Our goal was to find the master’s programs that are making online learning a priority,” said Kyle Darland, co-founder of OnlineMastersDegrees.org. “Each school in our taxation ranking offers at least one partially or fully-online master’s degree option, and for a price students can afford.”

What a Science Teacher Taught the Dallas Cowboys About Coaching

The Cowboys wanted to be better prepared if Covid-19 forced them to conduct meetings virtually again. They brought in Zoom coaches from a nearby college.

After the 2020 NFL season ended, Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy introduced his staff to a pair of experts he hoped would make them better at coaching football. Coordinators sat in the front row and took detailed notes. They peppered their lecturers with questions. They learned so much that it would transform the way they do their jobs.

Ruthanne “Rudi” Thompson and Adam Fein had absolutely no background in football. But their roles at the University of North Texas happened to make them vital resources for an NFL team conducting business in the middle of a pandemic. They’re experts in virtual learning and responsible for thousands of courses that tens of thousands of students have taken online since the Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020.

Professor Kincaid named 2022 president of the International Coaching Federation

Dr. Timothy Kincaid, adjunct faculty member for UNT's Aviation Logistics degree program, has been named the 2022 president of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) North Texas Chapter.

ICF is a global organization that focuses on advancing the coaching profession by setting standards, providing certification and building a network of qualified coaches that will help people unlock their full potential.

“I joined ICF in 2009 for professional development and networking to help me build my (then) new executive/leadership coaching practice,” said Kincaid. “Since then, the awareness and use of coaching has grown. Coaching is increasingly common at all levels of organizations and institutions—it is no longer just for the C-suite. Coaching is more common in higher education, especially for MBA program students.”

The ICF-North Texas chapter is among the largest and oldest of the 150 ICF chapters worldwide, and, as president, Kincaid hopes to help it continue growing while supporting its more than 200 members.

“A goal for 2022 is to expand awareness and impact of professional coaching throughout North Texas. This includes highlighting the distinctions between coaching and similar but different modalities, such as mentoring, advising, counseling, and training.”

Kincaid holds ICF's Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential and is on the executive coach rosters of a number of companies and universities.

UNT reaffirmed as Tier One Research University

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education™ reaffirmed UNT’s standing as a Tier One Research University in its 2021 report, released February 2. Only 141 universities nationwide are classified as “Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activity,” which places UNT among the nation’s most elite, top-tier research institutions.

“UNT’s continued inclusion in Carnegie’s ‘very high research activity’ classification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff as we’ve strengthened our research enterprise across the board the last several years,” said UNT President Neal Smatresk, noting that UNT was first included in the Carnegie rankings in 2015.

“We bolstered our research equipment and spaces, propelled an increasing number of our academic programs to national rankings, boosted enrollment at a time when others are lagging, and invested in our faculty and students — significantly growing our number of doctoral students and faculty in programs ranging from engineering to music,” Smatresk said. “This recognition by Carnegie is further evidence of our momentum in growing our research profile and our rise toward greater national prominence.”

G. BRINT RYAN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS DEAN'S EXCELLENCE FUND

The Dean’s Excellence Fund also provides immediate, essential support to our students. This fund serves as a vital resource to help our students and campus respond to opportunities and challenges as they occur. When you support the Dean’s Excellence Fund, you support the strategic vision of the college by allowing the Dean to have flexibility in directing the use of resources to the priorities of the college during this difficult time.
