ALUMNUS

Dr. J. Ricky Fergurson ('15, '17)

Alumnus Dr. J. Ricky Fergurson (pictured on left) was selected as the recipient of this year's Lou E. Pelton Emerging Scholar Award by the Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators Association – an affiliate of the Federation of Business Disciplines.

“Ricky Fergurson has distinguished himself as sales and marketing research. His research has been highly-regarded as evidenced by both citations and external grant funding,” said Dr. Lou Pelton.

Fergurson earned his MBA and PhD degrees from the UNT G. Brint Ryan College of Business in 2015 and 2017, respectively. He currently serves as an assistant professor of marketing in the Scott College of Business at Indiana State University. Fergurson’s primary research goals are grounded in professional selling and sales management, focusing on customer relationship development and retention. His published research is an extension of empirical investigations of both organizational and customer demands on salespersons’ performance outcomes, well-being and customer ownership.

The Lou E. Pelton Emerging Scholar Award was established as the Lou E. Pelton Early Career Excellence Award in 2018 (approved by the Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators’ Board of Directors). The intent of the award is to recognize and reward next-generation marketing scholars.

FACULTY

Dr. Mary Curtis &
Dr. Ananth Seetharaman

Horace Brock Centennial Professor of Accounting Dr. Mary Curtis and Don and Donna Millican Chair in Accounting Dr. Ananth Seetharaman are increasing visibility for the college after landing their research in top journals.

Two papers authored by Curtis were recently accepted into A List publications, both of which listed UNT PhD students as her coauthors. Her first paper, coauthored by UNT Accounting PhD graduates Lawrence Chui and Byron Pike, is titled, “How Does an Audit or a Forensic Perspective Influence Auditors’ Fraud-Risk Assessment and Subsequent Risk Response?” and was accepted by Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, and Accounting, Organizations and Society. Her second paper, coauthored by UNT Accounting PhD alum Nicholas Hunt and his colleague Jessica Rixom, is titled, “Financial Priming, Psychological Distance, and Recognizing Financial Misreporting as an Ethical Issue: The Role of Financial Reporting Experience”. The later was accepted by Accounting, Organizations and Society, one of the top-50 business journals in the world (listed on the Financial Times-50 journal list).

“I am in awe of this remarkable feat… and that her coauthors in both papers include our own PhD students,” stated Dr. Ananth Seetharaman.

Seetharaman’s coauthored research has also left a notable impression. His paper, titled “Relative Performance Goals and Management Earnings Guidance” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Ethics, also one of the top-50 business journals in the world. While this achievement comes after 3 years of hard work, Seetharaman reminded his colleagues that “if you believe that you have a good idea, you should keep plugging away at it, but be sure that you have other projects in the pipeline because some will take longer than others to find a good home.”

FEATURED DONOR

Christopher Morrow ('95)

The University of North Texas and Christopher Morrow, President of Morrow Hill Commercial Real Estate, are pleased to announce the creation of the Christopher M. Morrow Real Estate Scholarship Fund. Morrow, a 1995 UNT graduate, established the fund to provide two-year scholarships for two real estate students entering their junior year at UNT.

“This gift has long been a dream of mine,” says Chris Morrow. “I paid my own way through college at the University of North Texas, and it was there I developed the business acumen, leadership and grit that got me where I am today.”

The University of North Texas G. Brint Ryan College of Business is the choice of nearly 8,000 students — and ranked fifth in the nation by BachelorsDegreeCenter.org for its real estate program. Since 1961, the college has been continuously accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) — a hallmark of the world’s best business schools.

The $100,000 donation to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business will provide a permanent tradition of empowerment and opportunity for full-time students pursuing a degree in real estate.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Mr. Morrow,” says Jessica Steinke, assistant dean of Development for the college. “He is a role model for our students and his support will enable our nationally-ranked real estate program to become more accessible to those striving for academic excellence.”

Scholarships generated from Morrow’s gift will increase the accessibility of an affordable, high-quality education, and provide a lifetime of implications for UNT real estate students.

“There were times in my life when I wanted to drop out of school,” Morrow says. “It was hard to pay for it, and to keep going. But having that piece of paper from UNT makes it all worth it. It’s paved my path to success. Now it’s my time to inspire the next generation of real estate leaders.”

NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project awards $745,670 to UNT

The University of North Texas Jim McNatt Research Institute has been awarded $745,670 from NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP).

According to NASA, the three-year grant, titled “Resilient Supply Chain Ecosystem for Agile Manufacturing of Unmanned Aircraft Systems,” will “assist U.S. aerospace and defense entities’ manufacturing and supply chains to successfully pivot from low- to high-volume manufacturing, particularly focusing on electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles and unmanned aerial systems manufacturing and supply chain ecosystems.”

Kamesh Namaduri of the UNT College of Engineering will serve as the lead primary investigator, alongside co-primary investigators Nandika D’Souza, College of Engineering; Ila Manuj, Ryan College of Business; and Terry Pohlen, Ryan College of Business.

Analyzing current supply chain data, the researchers will set to identify risks and susceptibilities of high-volume manufacturing, while also proposing new supply chain solutions for some of the country's most important entities.

UNT was one of four universities to win a MUREP High-Volume Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management award, all of which totaled $3 million.
