RECENT GRAD

Ian Taylor-Schitz ('21)

Integrative studies major Ian Taylor-Schlitz has become one of UNT’s youngest graduates at just 15-years-old.

"Originally, I thought it would be scary because I didn't know if other students would accept me or not," he said. "But, as I took more classes, I realized people there didn't care how old I was—they treated me like any other student. It was the opposite of what I was expecting."

In addition to a college graduate, Taylor-Schlitz added entrepreneur to his resume in 2018 when he became the founder and CEO of Kidlamity Gaming. Taylor-Schlitz created Kidlamity with his older sister (who started college at 9-years-old) as a way to host video game tournaments for youth—enabling a more social and interactive version of the gaming world for kids.

Taylor-Schlitz got the idea for Kidlamity after attending esport tournaments and realizing that he was the only kid in attendance. Knowing that he shared the desire to participate in gaming tournaments with others his age, he decided to take action.

Next on Taylor-Schlitz’s list of pursuits is his master’s degree, although it’s clear that his degrees will only be a stepping stone to his future successes.

CURRENT STUDENT

Mackenzie Compton ('22)

Mackenzie Compton, graduate student pursing her master’s degree in accounting, has become the third UNT student to earn the distinction of Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholar.

“It is a tremendous honor to be nominated by the Department of Accounting Scholarship Committee, as well as being selected by the PCAOB as a recipient of this scholarship. I am grateful that I have had this opportunity to represent UNT Accounting through receiving this award. It is a tremendous relief of financial burden,” said Compton.

As a PCAOB Scholar, Compton will receive a scholarship in the amount of $10,000 for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Compton was also a member of the winning team of accounting students who took home first place at the 2021 Information Systems Audit and Control Association Case Competition.

The PCAOB is a nonprofit corporation created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 to oversee audits of public companies to protect the interests of investors. Funds collected from PCAOB penalties are used to fund merit-based scholarships, which are awarded to students in accredited accounting degree programs.

FEATURED DONORS

2021 We Care We Count donors

Each spring, faculty and staff join together to support the University of North Texas through its annual We Care We Count Faculty Staff Campaign.

Historically, the campaign has served as one of the most impactful ways for employees to give back. This year, more than $4,000 was donated toward the Ryan College of Business, with much of that support going towards the Dean's Excellence Fund. Gifts to the Dean's Excellence fund provide the college a way to assist the its highest priority needs at any given time.

This generosity translates to added support for innovative programs and life-changing scholarships—a true testament to the vote of confidence that the UNT family has for its workplace, and the lengths it will go to for ensuring the best possible opportunities for its students.

Toyota taps UNT MBA Cohort for fresh take

The MBA in Management Cohort at UNT is known for its collaborative experiences that bridge academia and industry through experiential learning. This spring, the program partnered with the TFS Digital Academy and strengthened its model for educational excellence by giving students the unique opportunity to work with senior executives from Toyota Financial Services (TFS)—a subsidiary of the largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

TFS tasked the MBA Cohort with analyzing current operations and presenting new solutions for functioning more efficiently and effectively through a complex and challenging project. Led by Kai Dosenbach and John Clementi of the TFS Digital Academy, and under the direction of faculty members Dr. Audhesh Paswan and Cathy Westurn, students employed real-world data and virtual industry visits to develop practical solutions.

The collaboration between UNT and the TFS Digital Academy was focused on leading industry and customer experience scenarios. The MBA students were asked to do an evaluation and provide TFS their consultation on key questions related to each scenario.

Over the course of several weeks, students delved into Toyota’s current business practices to identify opportunities for enhancements —ultimately presenting their findings and recommendations to Toyota executives.

"The students did an amazing job in a very short amount of time. They pulled together a lot of industry research to help formulate their strategic recommendations,” said Gordon McGrath, TFS Business Information Officer and executive sponsor of the engagement. “I can't say enough about how impressed I am with the work they have done. We're going to be following up with many of the recommendations we received." Students were judged on their ideas, presentation tactics and timelines—enabling them to develop new skillsets beyond the classroom through a unique learning experience. “We are delighted with the outcome, both the students and executives learned a great deal from this experience.” said Mark Dirkson, Talent Manager for the TFS Digital Academy.

Professors rank among top 2% of researchers in their field

Professor Dan Kim and Ryan Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship Jeremy Short have been recognized among the world’s top contributors in their fields of Information Technology and Decision Sciences and Management, respectively.

The Stanford study, published in the Public Library of Science Biology journal: “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators,” ranks the most cited researchers and those who are in the top 2% of their specialty area, worldwide.

Evaluating more than 100,000 researchers who have at least five scientific publications, forty-four other professors from the University of North Texas were included in the ranking.

This announcement strengthens UNT’s position as a Tier-One research university, and provides evidence that the G. Brint Ryan College of Business gives students access to some of the most respected scientists in their field.

Advancing intelligent mobility

Personal drones to pick up groceries and cleaning supplies, apps that help the elderly navigate public transportation, and robots that deliver food and social interaction to underserved populations. What would have seemed like luxuries prior to 2020 now look like valuable solutions during a global health crisis.

That's just part of the objective of a group of UNT researchers who are using their combined expertise to advance a broad integration of intelligent mobility systems spanning freight, people, airways and roadways, above ground and below ground -- and use them to solve challenging and pressing problems facing our transport world today. UNT has strong research and development programs in air and ground autonomous vehicles, supply chain logistics and artificial intelligence, and ongoing partnerships with industry and public organizations. A new Center for Integrated Intelligent Mobility Systems (CIIMS) launched this year to capitalize on the interdisciplinary research of UNT faculty in areas including business, engineering, science, information and health and public service.

"The whole concept of mobility we're tackling is very broad and encompassing," says Terry Pohlen, associate dean of the G. Brint Ryan College of Business, director of UNT's Jim McNatt Institute of Logistics and co-director of CIIMS. "It ranges from personal mobility to supply chains and the movement of freight."

PHILANTHROPIC OPPORTUNITIES AT THE RYAN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

THE MCNATT EMERGENCY FUND

Since 2019, Jim ('66) and Linda McNatt have poured more than $500,000 into The McNatt Fund for Students in Financial Crisis (The McNatt Emergency Fund), a scholarship established to create ways to assist students in crisis situations. Their generosity, coupled with the high demand for financial need during this past year, has since compelled others to contribute as well. Unfortunately, however, our students are in such dire need of help that the McNatt Emergency Funds are now nearly depleted.

This is where we need your help. Our students are relying on support from the McNatt Emergency Fund to graduate and we desperately need your continued support to meet their needs. Your gift, no matter the size, will make an immediate impact to help our students continue their pursuits of earning a UNT degree.

UNT CARES FUND

A gift of any size will support UNT's presidential initiative to provide financial support to students who have immediate and pressing needs related to the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Funds will fulfill short-term needs and help students achieve their long-term educational objectives.

G. BRINT RYAN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS DEAN'S EXCELLENCE FUND

The Dean’s Excellence Fund also provides immediate, essential support to our students. This fund serves as a vital resource to help our students and campus respond to opportunities and challenges as they occur. When you support the Dean’s Excellence Fund, you support the strategic vision of the college by allowing the Dean to have flexibility in directing the use of resources to the priorities of the college during this difficult time.
